MC2, a new video platform showcasing the creative potential of emerging technologies has launched on 21 July, debuting with its summer season Alternate Realities, a collection of video works featuring artists that implement AI to create new forms of digital storytelling.
Among them is the installation film How to Be Human by Swedish artist Jonas Lund, who stages “a clinical presentation of idealised human actions—from drinking coffee to emotional responses that become an unsettling stream of AI-generated attempts to visualise ‘perfect’ human actions, each narrated with mechanical precision.”
Other participating artists include Kawita Vatanajyankur with her video performance piece The Machine Ghost in the Human Shell in which she poses the question: “If intelligent machines are merging with our minds and eventually becoming the sources of our ‘souls,’ are our physical bodies becoming mere machines covering something else's ghosts?” Alternate Realities additionally features the artists Nouf Aljowaysir, Silvia dal Dosso, Nikita Diakur, Sam Lawton, Natasha Tontey, Lu Yang; and Ayman Zedani.
The channel is a collaboration between video platform Nowness and culture publication ArtReview, which are both part of Chinese luxury media group Meta Media based in Hong Kong. MC2, which is named after Albert Einstein’s equation for energy, aims to showcase cutting-edge artworks in both digital and IRL, and additionally create reports and essays that deliver the cultural context for the digital age.
